A strange warning has been appearing on the phones WhatsApp fans who attempt to close the iPhone version of the popular messaging service by swiping up.
It’s highly bizarre and grossly baffling.
If you are using WhatsApp on an iPhone running iOS 11, you might have received a message which asks you not to shut the app down by swiping up. That’s strange – since there’s no other way to close it.
Disgruntled users have taken to social media and support forums to find a resolution to the problem, which could mean you miss message notifications.
On every Apple mobile except the iPhone X, you close down apps by double-clicking the Home Button and then swiping up to close the windows you no longer wish to keep open using the “app switcher”.
On the iPhone X, you have to perform a gesture which involves swiping halfway up the screen, before holding for a second on an app and then swiping to close.
But WhatsApp fans are being told to avoid doing this – even though there’s no other way of closing the messaging app.
“Swiping to close WhatsApp can prevent you from receiving notifications,” the message reads.
One of those affected is Twitter user Grehivin, who contacted Apple to find out how to get rid of the annoying error message.
Writing on the social media site, a representative of the Cupertino based firm asked: ‘How are you closing the App?’
Grehivin posted a video explaining the process he was using, opening the multitasking screen and swiping up on WhatsApp to close it.
He was greeted by the error message ‘Swiping to close WhatsApp can prevent you from receiving notifications.’

It’s been suggested that the problem started when Apple launched iOS 11, the new operating system for iPhone and iPad which introduced a change to the way users view notifications – which are the messages which pop up whenever messages or alerts are received.
The website WABetaInfo, which specializes in covering WhatsApp, claimed on Twitter: “WhatsApp is testing a workaround to fix push notifications. This is an iOS 11 bug.”
