On the 9th of November, Disney announced plans or a new Star Wars film trilogy and a live-action TV series as it builds on the beloved and profitable science fiction franchise.
Robert Iger, Disney’s chief executive has joined hands with Rian Johnson, the director of the upcoming film ‘The Last Jedi’ to develop a brand new triology.
“We have big ambitions for the Star Wars franchise. We’re also planning to produce a number of original series for the new service and are already developing a Star Wars live-action series.”
While there have previously been animated Star Wars series, this will be the franchise’s first live-action show for the small screen.
It was announced that a live-action Star Wars TV series is on the way, to air on Disney’s streaming service by the end of 2019. The most recent series to take place in the universe was 2014’s animated Star Wars: Rebels, which began its fourth season last month.
He said there would be completely new characters in “a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored”.
Disney plans to launch Star Wars feature films in a new direct-to-consumer pay service that will offer “thousands of hours” of film and television content, he said.
Disney touted the box office success of two new Star Wars films and expressed confidence that “The Last Jedi,” set to debut in theaters next month, would be a hit.
After the release of The Last Jedi, next year will see the Han Solo origins tale, much of which was reshot by Ron Howard after the original directors, Phil Lord and Chris Miller, left the project. It will be followed by Episode IX, which will see The Force Awakens director, JJ Abrams, return to the fold.
