Constable under arrest, acid attack between husband and wife

Acid attacks are common, especially towards women in India; for either not accepting a love proposal or as means of threat. But what if a police officer does it?

In a shocking incident, a police constable allegedly threw acid on his wife, who is also a constable in UP police. Both are deputed in Sambhal district.

Station house officer Durgesh Kumar Mishra said that accused husband Harshvardhan has filed a divorce case in family court in the past and on Wednesday evening he called up his wife Sumesh to have a conversation. Sumesh alleged that when they were going to a place in Raisati, Harshvardhan stopped the bike and seeing no traffic on the road he threw acid on her. Meanwhile, the husband said in his defense that his wife poured acid upon herself on her own. Doctors said that the woman was out of danger.

In her complaint, constable Sumesh said that since she had given birth to twin daughters, the attitude of her husband and in-laws had been horrible towards her. She was married to Harshvardhan in 2014.

“Everything was fine until the birth of my twin daughters. However, I was shocked to see a change in the behavior of my husband and in-laws but I tried my best to make things better. Now, I live with my two daughters in a different house after my husband sought divorce,” Sumesh stated in the complaint.

The SHO said the constable Harshvardhan has been booked under section 498, 326A and 377 on the basis of a complaint filed by his constable wife.

“As the matter is related to family court, we can’t arrest the accused until a case is lodged under section 307. Meanwhile, department inquiry has been set up against both – husband and wife,” said the SHO.
