Amid tight security and joyously dancing supporters, Emmerson Mnangagwa was sworn in as Zimbabwe’s president today. In a military takeover, which put an end to the rule of his predecessor Robert Mugabe, Emmerson takes charge as the new leader of Zimbabwe.
Emmerson is one of the closest allies of Mugabe. The oath-taking function occurred at the national sports stadium on the outskirts of Harare before thousands of supporters, dignitaries, and foreign diplomats.
The man known as “The Crocodile” wore a dark suit, red tie and matching handkerchief, and a row of medals on his chest for the ceremony.
The former President Robert Mugabe, who ruled the southern African country for 37 autocratic years, was ousted from office when the military intervened after he had sacked Mnangagwa as Vice-President.
