People always prey on the weaker ones. In most cases, it is the women and the kids. This is what the statistics say about the crime committed.
Maharashtra stands among the top four states in the country where crime against women, children, and general crime is the highest, according to Crime in India, 2016 Statistics, released by the National Crime Records Bureau Thursday.
Rape cases have reported an increase of 12.4 % from 34,651 cases in 2015 to 38,947 in 2016 with Madhya Pradesh (MP) and Uttar Pradesh (UP) reporting the highest incidence of rapes at 4,882 and 4,816 cases followed by Maharashtra 4,189 (10.7 %) during 2016.
Cases under Crime Against Women saw an increase of 2.9 % over 2015 with majority (32.6 %) of such crimes being reported under Cruelty by Husband or his Relatives followed by Assault on Women with Intent to Outrage her Modesty (25 %), Kidnapping and Abduction of Women (19 %) and (11.5 %). Total crimes against women stood at 338,954 in 2016.
UP reported the highest number of crimes against women (49,262) followed by West Bengal (32,513) with Delhi Union Territory reporting the highest crime rate 160.4 compared to the national average rate of 55.2.
Unfortunately, Crime Against Children has shown an increasing trend over the past three years as it went up by 13.6 % from 94,172 in 2015 to 106,958 in 2016. Kidnapping and Abduction of Children accounted for 52.3 % of the cases — UP had the highest number followed by Maharashtra and MP. Cases under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) came next, that is 34.4 %, with these three states taking the lead in that order.
As for missing persons including children, a total of 549,008 persons (234,334 males and 314,674 females) were reported missing in 2016 of which maximum persons missing were reported from Maharashtra 17.2 % (94,919 persons) during 2016.
A total of 229,381 persons (139,858 males and 89,523 females) were traced at the end of the year, including the previous year in the country.
A total of 111,569 children (41,175 males and 70,394 females) went missing, with a maximum number from West Bengal (15.6 %) during 2016. A total of 55,944 children were traced at the end of the year.
Incidentally, 44 % or 3,579 out of 8,132 cases of Human Trafficking were reported from West Bengal, followed by Rajasthan (1,422) sharing 17.9 %. However, a total of 15,379 persons were trafficked during the year including 58.5 % children. A total of 23,117 were rescued during the year in the country. Children constituted 61.3 % of the victims rescued, including victims of previous years.
A total of 4.83 million cognizable crimes comprising 2.97 million Indian Penal Code (IPC) crimes and 1.85 million Special and Local laws crimes were reported in 2016, showing an increase of 2.6 % over 2015. UP accounted for 9.5 % of total IPC crimes followed by MP 8.9 %, Maharashtra 8.8 %, and Kerala 8.7 %.
