Kochi and Kozhikode – are among the top 10 Indian cities in terms of crime rate. According to latest statistics from National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), Kochi is ranked second in the crime rate – 757.9 crimes per one lakh population in 2016 – across India, behind Delhi whose rate is 1222.5 crimes per lakh people. Kozhikode is in 10th position — 400.6 crimes per one lakh population in 2016.
Among states, Kerala is second in crime rate, again behind Delhi.
According to NCRB data, 16,052 IPC crimes were registered in Kochi during 2016, while 8,136 IPC crimes were registered in Kozhikode the same year. However, experts add the caveat that while these stats do indicate the rise in crime in Kochi and Kozhikode it is also a reflection of the exponential increase in crimes being reported in Kerala. Out of 70 lakh cases registered last year in the whole country, 7.5 lakh were from the state — Kerala annually registers the number of cases than the combined figures of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
Another silver lining is that regarding crimes committed here in relation to the overall percentage of crimes in India, the position of Kochi and Kozhikode falls to 11 and 16 respectively in NCRB’s all-India rankings. Revealingly, a major chunk of cases registered in the state in motor vehicle accident cases, while the number of cases registered in connection with agitations and minor clashes between workers of political parties is disproportionately high. Not least, Kerala is probably the only state that registers IPC cases for drunk driving.
