More than over 24,000 teachers from Raipur were detained by Police in Chattisgarh, as the government cracked down a protest rally by Shiksha Mitras demanding regularization of their jobs on Saturday. The protesters were held for violating prohibitory orders. The Congress promptly called for a state-wide bandh on December 5 in protest.
The Raipur collector had imposed Section 144 and turned the entire area within 200 meters of the protest site a no-entry zone. Phone jammers were believed to have been used. In a synchronized operation that began on Friday at midnight, teachers were detained from homes, railway stations and bus stands.
The Shiksha Mitras, or panchayat teachers, have been on strike for the past 13 days and had announced a mega rally in Raipur to press for their demand for regularization. But they hadn’t bargained for a government crackdown. Nearly all the detained teachers, except the leaders, were released on Saturday.
Raipur collector O P Choudhary said in his order that the rally of teachers would “disturb the peace” in Raipur, so Section 144 was imposed.
