Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane says he was right to hold back on criticising his talisman Cristiano Ronaldo whose goalscoring performances against both Borussia Dortmund and Sevilla have contributed to a big Ballon d’Or-winning week for the Portugal captain.
The Portugal star, who won his fifth Ballon d’Or this week to draw level with Lionel Messi in the all-time standings, was inspirational to his side’s demolition of the visitors in the first half at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Five-time Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice as Real Madrid put in a sensational first-half performance to blow away Sevilla. Nacho, Kroos, and Achaf also found the net in an offensive exhibition against their visitors.
Ronaldo was continually backed by his coach, who explained on Saturday evening why he has previously told the press to ‘be careful’ with Ronaldo.
“We can be very pleased because putting five past Sevilla was no mean feat. I’m thrilled with Cristiano Ronaldo’s goals and for the guys who haven’t had so much game time so far and did a fantastic job today.
“It’s perhaps the perfect week for him. I already said that we had to be careful with him and I’ll say it again because I know how ambitious he is. Sometimes he doesn’t score and he’s not happy but you always have to be careful with him.” Zidane said
On Wednesday, Ronaldo scored in a 3-2 win against Borussia Dortmund to become the first player to score in all six Champions League group games in a season, netting nine in those six.
The next day, he won his fifth Ballon d’Or – the award for the best player in the world, taking him level with Barcelona and Argentina forward Lionel Messi’s all-time record.
