A 36-year-old man was among those arrested for allegedly bludgeoning a woman to death with a hammer in north Delhi’s Rani Bagh, driving with the body to Mussoorie and dumping it in a gorge.

Lalit Jain, 36, managed to keep the murder of his wife Silky Jain, 36, a secret for eight days before registering a missing person complaint, which exposed the crime, said Aslam Khan, DCP (northwest).

On Friday, Delhi Police sought the help of their counterparts in Uttarakhand as well as that from Indo-Tibetan Border Police force personnel to recover the woman Silky Jain’s body from a gorge on Hathipaon-Mussoorie route.

Apart from the husband Lalit Jain, police have also arrested Lalit’s father, brother, sister-in-law and his brother’s brother-in-law for being passive participants in Silky’s murder.

Lalit and Silky were married for seven years and lived in Rani Bagh. Lalit is a “freelance property dealer” and the couple had no children.

“The couple fought often. Lalit blamed Silky for compelling him to live away from his father. Silky blamed him for giving more importance to his family instead of her parents,” said Khan.

One such quarrel on the night of December 3 turned violent and might have triggered the murder.

“Lalit attacked and strangulated Silky, leaving her half dead. He then called his relatives to his home before using a hammer to bludgeon her to death,” said the DCP.

The same night, the four of them packed Silky’s body in a sack, loaded it in Lalit’s car and drove it to Mussoorie, the DCP said. “They then rolled down the body down a gorge near the hill station,” Khan added.

Lalit then returned home and continued with his normal life, even using his wife’s mobile phone. “Silky was not in the habit of speaking to her parents daily. When her parents called on her number once in between, Lalit told them that she was busy,” said the DCP.

On December 11, Monday, Lalit visited the Rani Bagh police station and registered a missing person complaint.

In his complaint, he claimed that his wife had left the house on Monday but not returned home.

“When we spoke to Silky’s parents, they said they were unaware of her disappearance. They immediately named Lalit as a suspect. When we interrogated him, he initially tried to mislead us. On sustained interrogation he broke down and finally confessed,” said the DCP.

Once Lalit and his family’s role in the crime was ascertained, they were arrested on Thursday, said the DCP. “A police team took them to Mussoorie where they pointed out the location. It took a lot of work to recover the body,” said the DCP.
