Cincinnati Police Chief Eliot Isaac tells the Cincinnati Enquirer the security officer at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center was hit in the shoulder. The unidentified officer’s condition was not reported Wednesday night.
The shooting occurred in the psychiatric emergency services department in the hospital, according to WLWT Channel 5.
The gunman entered the building at about 2 p.m. and fired multiple shots. After wounding the security guard, the gunman shot himself. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
There were no reports of other injuries.
The security guard was not armed, the Enquirer reports, and no other officers fired any shots.
The entrance to the hospital has metal detectors and Isaac said security knew immediately that the suspect was armed.
