We have heard many types of suicides like poisoning hanging etc but it is a strange type of suicide that a man with the 36-year-old jeweler, hailing from Thanjavur, committed suicide by putting his head inside a bucket of water at his house in Mandaveli on Monday.
He took the step after his divorced wife and her family did not allow him to meet his three-year-old daughter.
The man, Prathap Rajan, 36, was running a jewelry shop on Bazaar Street in Mylapore.
After legally separating from his wife in March, he approached the lawyer to get permission to meet his daughter.
However, his in-laws did not agree to it.
Prathap stayed with his family.
He lived on the first floor, while his brothers and father Rajan lived on the ground floor.
Prathap’s father Rajan told police that Prathap was aloof and never mingled with his family after the separation.
On Sunday morning, Prathap had come downstairs to take his breakfast and lunch. Prathap’s family had last seen him at home at 4 pm on Sunday before they left home. He did not answer calls from his father and brothers. Police said his family members used a crowbar to break open the door to Prathap’s room, where they found him dead.
They took him to the Government Royapettah Hospital for an autopsy. Based on Rajan’s complaint, the Foreshore Estate police registered a case.
