Commission agent arrested for duping farmers of Rs 1.57 crore

The Sangrur police arrested a commission agent and two of his accomplices, who had allegedly duped as many as 36 local farmers of Rs 1 crore 57 lakh.

Interacting with media persons Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of police,  Patiala range,  Sukhchain Singh Gill said the department had received complaints against commission agents Satnam Singh, son of Gurmail Singh and a resident of Ladda village for allegedly duping local farmers of the hard earned money.

The DIG said that Satnam Singh stole stolen bank cheques from the local farmers and used these to transfer a sum of Rs 83.50 lakh into his own account. In this regard, a case was registered under section 320, 406, 379 and 120 B of the IPC at the city police station to Dhuri on November 8, this year.

Besides, another case was also registered against him on a complaint given by one Jeet Singh, son of Niranjan Singh, who reported to the police that he had sold his 80 quintal paddy to Satnam Singh for which you had given him bank cheque. The cheque bounced, following which another case under Sections 420 and 406 of IPC was also registered by the accused. During investigations, the cops found that the commission agent had actually duped a total of 36 farmers of Rs 1.57 lakh.

During investigations, the names of two of his employees including accountant Sattar Khan, Harvinder Singh and one Sarabjit Singh also cropped up, who was accordingly included in the FIR. The cops discovered that Satnam Singh along with Harvinder Singh and Sattar Khan had escaped to Thailand from where they were planning to migrate to Australia.

Following this, the Sangrur police got in touch with central and state intelligence agencies, which took up the matter with the Thailand authorities, which apprehended the three and deported them back to India.

On reaching the Indira Gandhi International Airport on December 22, the Sangrur police arrested them while they are still on a lookout for Sarabjit Singh, who is the fourth accused in the case.
