Nayanthara celebrates 14 years in the film industry : From Superstar Jodi to Lady Superstar : See Pics
Nayanthara ,orginal name Diana Mariam Kuriyan, is an Indian film actress who mainly appears in Tamil films and predominantly appears in other South Indian movies.
Nayanthara made her acting debut in the 2003 Malayalam film Manassinakkare with Jayaram. She made her debut in Tamil cinema with Ayya (2005) and Telugu with Lakshmi (2006). Both were successful.
THE LUCKY CHARM
Her second film as Superstar Rajinikanth’s Chandramukhi was a blockbuster, and Nayanthara instantly became the lucky charm for her films. Word spread to the Telugu film industry as well, where she was cast alongside top stars like Venkatesh right from the beginning. It saved her the trouble of climbing the proverbial ladder; she started her journey right at the top. And after 14 years in the Tamil film industry, she is still up there!
NOT A SMOOTH RIDE
She did face her share of failures in both her professional and personal lives. In films, the failures came in the form of Kalvanin Kadhali, Thalaimagan, and a few others. But she redefined her image, quite literally. Again with a Rajinikanth film, she made her comeback as the ‘new’ Nayan, after shedding a lot of weight.
With the makeover, came new brands of films.
Till then, Nayan, who was cast opposite established stars, from then on was seen romancing young actors like Dhanush and Arya. Her extremely glamorous and kickass avatar in Ajith’s Billa , made viewers draw comparisons to Angelina Jolie.
THE BREAKTHROUGH
However, the film that established her as a terrific performer came years later, Naanum Rowdy Thaan. Directed by Vignesh Shivan, who eventually went on to become her boyfriend, the film had her playing a deaf woman on a journey to exact revenge from a local don. She was convincing as the naive and gullible girl, who made the audience laugh and feel for her at the same time.
When you look at her filmography, Naanum Rowdy Thaan is the turning point of her career-graph, the film that catapulted Nayan to the league of performers and not just the quintessential ‘heroine’.
LADY SUPERSTAR
Since then, the films she picked were offbeat ones . Maya, Dora and Aramm, all of which helped her earn the title ‘Lady Superstar’. Over the years, several Tamil heroines have acquired a fan base that can be compared to that of a hero.
But Nayan has been successful in converting them to box-office numbers too.
