The vigilance department held Meerut deputy chief medical officer Dr. Ashok Nigam on charges of accepting a bribe of Rs 1.5 lakh in the name of registration of a nursing home on Tuesday morning. The top doctor was caught red-handed when a trap was laid after the complainant tipped them off about the bribe being demanded by Dr. Nigam. The doctor was arrested by the police and a case was registered against him.
Chief medical officer Dr. Raj Kumar Chaudhary informed that he came to know about the arrest only when Dr. Nigam was taken away by the police. He revealed that Dr. Nigam was heading an inquiry against one Dr. Neeraj Tomar – a government doctor – who was allegedly practicing at his wife’s clinic. Allegedly Nigam demanded the bribe to sort out the inquiry.
Tomar is a government doctor and practices as a dentist at the community health center, Mawana. Meanwhile, Dr. Raj Kumar Chaudhary has issued a departmental inquiry into the matter and said that once the report is here, action will be taken accordingly.
A case has been registered against Dr. Nigam under relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
