Research institutes, including the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), have dismissed rumors that fish might have eaten the body parts of those whose who perished in the cyclone.
“Fish generally do not eat dead bodies and the catch that is available in Kerala is safe to consume,” said Dr. Sunil Muhammed, principal scientist, CMFRI.
The misinformation campaign has affected the sale of seafood. The office-bearers of the All Kerala Fish Merchants and Commission Agents Association also confirmed that people are averse to buying fish post-Ockhi.
The study says the small fishes only eat both Phytoplankton and zooplankton and the medium-sized fishes prefer to hunt their own prey especially the alive ones.
They confirmed that only some types of shark eat dead bodies. And even said that these types of sharks are not found in Indian shores.
