The scientist, named Jay Tate, is a former Army major and currently, he and his wife Anny are running the Spaceguard Centre in Powys. The couple has been running the observatory for 16 years, and their main work is to monitor asteroids and comets on a regular basis.
The main task of Tate and his wife is to alert the authorities in advance about a potential asteroid collision with earth. But after analyzing the movements and characteristics of asteroids and other space rocks for such a long time, the asteroids have concluded a surprising thing. They predicted that Earth will end on March 16, 2880. Well, this sounds quite unusual. Because not only they have predicted the possible year of the destruction of Earth, but also they have given the exact date of the end of the earth.
They mostly indicate about a potentially fatal asteroid hitting our Earth leading to its devastation. Tate said, “The year 2880 should be rather fun. It will come very close. At two kilometers across, it’s big enough for a global event, a bit small for a truly massive shock. Does it worry me? Does being hit by a bus bother you? They are both logical risks in life.”
Tate believes that monitoring asteroids and space rocks and analyzing their behavior is essential in the long term. We are not likely to get hit by an asteroid in the next few years, but, in the long term, it will happen, he informed. Tate said that the event of a collision of an asteroid with earth is inevitable. One does not need to have the brains of an archbishop to realize that. “Some have come as close as our satellites – we’ve had a few minor hits. But we can stop it hitting. We can turn a direct hit into a near-miss. The whole name of the game is to get the time to work on an asteroid’s properties and its measurements,” Tate informed.
Mr. Tate and his wife have been tracking more than 50 space rocks that are currently on the move, and according to Tate, NASA has highlighted about 670 space objects that pose a threat to our Earth. The work the couple is doing inside the Spaceguard Centre observatory is very vital, and there is also a burglar alarm at the center that is linked to the solar system. Previously, the Spaceguard Center was called Powys Observatory.
Currently, construction work is going on at the center in order to build a £97,000 dome that will enhance tracking facilities. But the Tate couple is facing monetary problems and are currently dependent on donations to carry on their task. They say that the government does not understand that their work is very vital and if they get ample support they can possibly save the earth from destruction.
