The Samsung Gear S2 launched in India with two variants, namely the standard version and the Classic version watch runs on Samsung’s own OS (Tizen), which Samsung has been pushing since last year. There is a downside to the Tizen OS, which makes most of its apps inaccessible on most Android phones (except the new Samsung ones). Besides this, the number of apps available on Tizen is also limited.
Samsung’s Gear S2 has a unique round design with a rotating bezel for selecting different screens. The Samsung Gear S2 has a free bezel that can be rotated to access different screens. This makes it intuitive and a fancy feature at the same time. All the variants come with two physical buttons, which act as the back and home buttons.
Samsung’s Gear S2 comes with Gorilla Glass 3 surface over the 1.2-inch AMOLED display. This has a resolution of 360 x 360 (302ppi) pixels. The screen has excellent viewing angles and the display worked effectively even under direct sunlight.
The new Samsung’s Gear S2 is powered by a dual-core Exynos 3250 processor that clocks in at 1GHz. It is backed by 512MB RAM and 4 GB storage. For connectivity, it uses Bluetooth 4.1, NFC and WiFi. Its sensors include an accelerometer, gyrometer, HRM, barometer and ambient light sensor. The Samsung Gear S2 is also dust and waterproof with its IP68 rating and the 250 mAh battery lasts a whole day even when Bluetooth is turned on (permanently)
The user can swipe and tap the touchscreen. Special mention, this smartwatch comes with a T9 keypad for replying to a text and is very helpful if you do not feel like taking out the phone.
At the starting price of Rs 22,900, the Samsung Gear S2 is priced at par with the Moto 360 (2nd gen), but offers much more flexible options and customizations. The Bezel is an added feature that we haven’t seen in any watch yet.
It definitely is a style statement and has options for all kinds of uses. Had it not been for the not so flexible Tizen OS we’re sure this would have broken the smartwatch market. All in all, this smartwatch is a very good buy for people who already own a relatively new Samsung smartphone like the Galaxy S5 or higher.
