Mixing drinking and driving is bad and against the law. To motivate the police cops to catch the culprits will this new plan work?
If a policeman arrests a person for finding him driving any vehicle under the influence of liquor in south Gujarat, then he will be eligible for a prize of Rs. 100. The order was issued by GS Malik, inspector general of police, Surat range, just before a plethora of parties are set to begin on the eve of New Year.
Malik has issued a circular to superintendents of police in Surat, Tapi, Navsari, Valsad and Dang districts. It is for the first time that such an announcement of the special prize has been made by the range IGP office to not only ensure prohibition but also to avoid accidents due to drunken driving.
Over 325 people were arrested by Valsad police on December 31, 2016, and the majority of them were nabbed while entering Gujarat from the Union territory of Daman and Diu. The figure of arrest was highest in the state since a large number of revelers from Surat and other places in south Gujarat go to Daman to celebrate New Year. Majority of them chose to return home in the night itself when the police were carrying out checking to prevent road accidents.
“We will enforce prohibition law strictly and further strengthen enforcement during the New Year celebrations. The prize of Rs100 per arrest has been announced to encourage policemen. Majority of the offenders will not consume liquor in Gujarat due to the strict prohibition law here. Police will take strict action against those caught drunk,” Malik told TOI.
Meanwhile, the police will be using 35 breathalyzers in Valsad, the district that borders Daman and has asked the staff at check posts to stay alert. “Not just at entry points, we are keeping strict police watch in other parts of the district too. We have made special arrangements at the check posts where movement of people will be high,” said Sunil Joshi, superintendent of police, Valsad.
