Among all the Telecom operators in the country, Jio once again topped the chart with fastest 4G Download speed. According to the Indian telecom regulator TRAI, Jio averaged 21.8Mbps peak download speed at the end of October.
During the month of October, Reliance Jio had an average download speed of 19.6Mbps while Vodafone came in second with an average download speed of 9.3Mbps. Jio offered more than double the speed in comparison with that of Vodafone, its closest competitor according to TRAI data. Bharti Airtel, the leading telecom service provider in terms of subscriber base, managed average download speed of 8.7Mbps while Idea Cellular was placed fourth with an average download speed of 8.6Mbps.
The data is based on upload and download speed collected by TRAI using its MySpeed application which tracks data speed on a real-time basis. Reliance Jio’s download speed increased from 19.3Mbps in August to 21.9Mbps recorded in the month of September and has now dropped to 19.6Mbps. Vodafone, Idea Cellular and Bharti Airtel averaged 8.7Mbps, 8.6Mbps and 7.5Mbps respectively in September.
Since the launch of its 4G service in September last year, Reliance Jio has managed to add 160 million subscribers and has even introduced tariff hike. The company recently acquired wireless assets from Reliance Communications to further strengthen its network capabilities.
While Jio offers more than double the speed offered by Vodafone, it is far short of its goal of 135Mbps download speed promised at the time of launch of its service last year. Despite the fastest network speed, Jio continues to be used as second SIM by most users and its biggest challenge continues to be consistency and onboard subscribers of incumbents like Airtel and Vodafone on to its platform.
