Police’s rejection of permission to Jignesh Mewani and Umar Khalid for an already scheduled event lead to immense protest.
Police was forced to detain some of the students and organisers who were protesting to restore law and order in the state capital that has already witnessed violence in the last two-three days during the protests. The administration has also imposed section 149 in parts of Mumbai.
An FIR has been registered against Jignesh Mewani and Umar Khalid under section 153(A), 505 & 117 at Vishrambaug Police Station in Pune.
The event organisers alleged that the police denial was not correct as was acting on the basis of the news doing the rounds about Umar Khalid and Jignesh Mewani for the past few days.
“Umar Khalid and Jignesh Mewani have been invited to this event here, this had been fixed earlier,” said Sagar Bhalerao (Chhatra Bharati, VP), organiser of the event.
“Had booked Bhaidas Hall for All India National Students’ Summit here on Thursday, but now we are being denied entry. Reason police are citing is the news doing the rounds about Umar Khalid and Jignesh Mewani for the past few days,” he added.

The police had said on Tuesday they had received a complaint against both Jignesh and Umar Khalid for their “provocative” speeches at an event in Pune on December 31.
According to the complainants – Akshay Bikkad and Anand Dhond – Mevani and Khalid had made “provocative” comments at the event.
Clashes between Dalit groups and supporters of right-wing organisations during the 200th-anniversary celebrations of the Bhima-Koregaon battle in Pune district had left a man and a child dead.
