Railways’ smart system: new designs via competition

With the developments in the various public sectors flourishing, the railway system too decided to up its game, changing to the smart option for its passengers.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has begun taking online submissions for the design of the card from the citizens for the proposed Integrated Ticketing System (ITS). This system would allow the commuters to use a single smart-card based ticket in all modes of transport existing in the city.

The planning authority has conducted a competition to finalize the design for the smart card of the proposed ITS. This smart card will allow the commuters to travel in railways, monorail, existing metro corridors and Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) buses.

Currently, the passengers are forced to purchase tickets from each operator by standing in long queues to purchase tickets and recharge smart cards. “The proposed system would reduce the ticket queues and make it easier for commuters to purchase tickets which can be used for all the modes of transport. This will be done through a common facility mobile application which is yet to be developed,” said an MMRDA official.

The competition is being conducted in three categories in order to design a brand name, logo and the smart card for the ticketing system. The selected brand name, logo and design would become the symbol of transportation and integrated ticketing system in the city.

“We have sought to identify an ITS brand which would become the symbol of ticketing system in the city. In India, we have several branded smart cards which include Kochi 1 in Kochi, Janmarg card in Ahmedabad and Maha Card in Nagpur,” said an MMRDA official. The design for the card must reflect the spirit of Mumbai and its transportation. Once the logo and design are selected by the committee, it would be used for marketing and promotional activities.

The design can be submitted until January 21 on this link: www. mygov.in/task/name-logo-and-design-contest-integrated-ticketing-system-its-Mumbai/. The planning authority is ready with the Detailed Project Report (DPR) which is prepared by the appointed consultant PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC). The bids for the vendor is yet to be invited by the authority. PWC would assist in the bidding process and to finalize the vendors. The planning authority has approached the railways and BEST. They are yet to receive a final confirmation from the authorities.

Recently, the planning authority had organized a study tour in order to understand the technical aspect of the single ticket system. The senior officials from all transport bodies were invited for the study tour conducted in London, Manchester, and Dubai. This tour was conducted in order to study the ITS system which is used by the transport divisions at these places.
