NASA Juno spacecraft that is orbiting Jupiter has captured an astonishing image which shows the tumultuous atmosphere of the largest planet of our solar system. The US space agency has shared the beautiful color enhanced image to blow the mind of space lovers.
The stunning photo was captured by JunoCam aboard Juno Spacecraft at a distance that was a little more than one Earth diameter from Jupiter. The image was captured on Dec. 16, 2017, at 9:43 a.m. PST (12:43 p.m. EST) from 8,292 miles (13,345 kilometers) above the tops of Jupiter’s clouds, at a latitude of 48.9 degrees. Each pixel in the image measures 5.8 miles (9.3 kilometers).
The image shows northern hemisphere of hot Jupiter filled with fast moving clouds and tornadoes. The turbulent atmosphere on the gaseous planet is very hostile and not suitable for life.
Citizen scientists Gerald Eichstädt and Seán Doran applied to image processing and enhanced the colors of the photo before releasing it on the NASA’s official website.
JunoCam is a color, visible-light camera designed to capture remarkable pictures of Jupiter’s poles and cloud tops. As Juno’s eyes, it provides a wide view, helps to give context to the spacecraft’s other instruments. JunoCam was included on the spacecraft specifically for purposes of public engagement; although its images will be helpful to the science team, it is not considered one of the mission’s science instruments.
