The 75th edition of Golden Globes didn’t throw up any surprises. Hosted by Seth Meyers, the annual gala event touched on the molestation scandals which shook Hollywood last year and set the mood for the awards season. Almost all celebrities turned up wearing black to express their solidarity towards the survivors of sexual assault and those who strived to lift the curtain from the industry’s worst-kept secret.
A look at few of the biggest winners of the night proved it was women who ruled the entertainment industry in 2017. Lady Bird was awarded for best motion picture (musical or comedy) and The Handmaid’s Tale the best TV series (drama). Big Little Lies, which was centered on domestic abuse and rape, won many awards, further testifying that women’s stories and struggles have finally taken centre stage and are being appreciated.
However, more than just the awards, Golden Globes became a platform where few of the most renowned faces spoke against molestation. Reese Witherspoon celebrated the ones who broke silence against assault last year and Oprah Winfrey, while accepting the Cecil B DeMille Award award, said a time will come when women will not have to say ‘Me Too’. Winfrey created history by being the first black woman to be given the award.
