Wrong-way driver to blame for fiery crash that killed 6 people

Six people are dead following a fiery two-vehicle crash along Interstate 5, and the California Highway Patrol is blaming the tragedy on a wrong-way driver.

The incident started with multiple calls to the CHP around 12:30 Sunday morning about a wrong-way driver, traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of Interstate 5, just north of County Road 17 in the small community of Yolo.

Two vehicles engulfed in flames after a violent collision that burned portions of the freeway, leaving a white residue on the roadway.

There will be no official identification of the people who died.
Wrong-way crashes happen far too frequently on U.S. roads and highway. Government statistics show they kill, on average, nearly one person every single day.

California launched a pilot program last year to identify devices that can potentially reduce the number of wrong-way drivers. Those devices include LED blinking lights and video surveillance.
