With the World Economic Forum to begin soon, what does the Prime Minister of India have in mind for the growth of the nation?
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday warned that the emerging challenges to the international system and global governance architecture need serious attention of stakeholders including governments, companies and civil societies group and said that he will outline his vision of India’s engagement with the international community in Davos.
The statement came ahead of the PM’s maiden trip to the Alpine resort where he will showcase “New India” and the opportunities for global investors in an economy which is expected to grow at close to 7% in the coming years.
Modi is due to host a reception on Monday evening flagging of India’s campaign that includes the largest ever corporate contingent apart from half-a-dozen ministers. The PM is due to speak at the plenary session on Tuesday during a 36-hour trip to the resort that is two-and-half hours drive from Zurich.
The world’s top industry leaders and over 50 heads of state and governments gather in sub-zero temperatures at the World Economic Forum‘s annual conference to discuss the challenges facing the global economy and the way forward.
Prime Minister took to his Twitter handle to make a statement ahead of his departure.

He is also scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with the Swiss President Alain_Bersetand and Swedish PM Stefan Lofven.

“I look forward to my first visit to the World Economic Forum at Davos, at the invitation of India’s good friend and Founder of the WEF, Professor Klaus Schwab,” he said, while describing the theme of the Forum, ‘Creating a Shared Future in a Fractured World’ as “both thoughtful and apt”.
The comments assume significance in the wake of several leaders expected to talk about various risks facing the world, including those from economic protectionism and differences amongst various world powers. The summit is also being attended by US President Donald Trump, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Emannuel Macron and UK Prime Minister Theresa May, among others.
Modi will also host a dinner for global CEOs. On Tuesday, he will interact with global business community members, besides delivering his keynote address.
While US president Donald Trump is scheduled to speak on the closing day of the conference on January 26, the two leaders won’t be in Davos at the same time. Pakistan PM Shahid Khaqan Abbasi too will be at the WEF event but no talks with PM Modi are planned.
Apart from PM Modi, the Indian team has flown in chefs to serve Indian food and two yoga instructors to Davos to showcase India’s soft power.
