Kashmir’s one-of-a-kind library gains attention; enters Limca records

The feeling that you get when you hold a book and read is indescribable and cannot be compared to a digital device.

And reading is heaven for book-lovers. But what if you heaven is on a lake?

Gulshan Books, a publishing house, and library in Kashmir is the only library in the state on a lake. 

The bookshop has now entered the Limca Books of Records for its wide collection of 80,000 books.

Located in Kashmir’s Nehru Park, the bookshop houses books from a wide variety of subjects, from many renowned writers. They also maintain an unprecedented collection of literature based on the valley. This division is owned and managed by Sheikh Muhammad Usman and Sons is truly a gem for readers. 

They have a reading room cafe and serve hot cups of tea and coffee. To add it to the bliss, anyone who comes to read here can sit and enjoy the view for as long as they want. 

“This is a moment of pride for all of us. The publishing house is focusing on the heritage of the valley. It is preserving the culture of the valley and giving a lot of encouragement and a platform to show their work to the budding authors,” said Farman Ali, a local author.

The owner of the cafe, Sheikh Ajaz claims that they have been preserving the work of local authors and also books written on Kashmir for the past 80 to 90 years.

“My great-grandfather started this work. I am fifth in the line carrying it. Our family is in this profession from past 80-90 years. This recognition is a moment of pride for us,” Ajaz told a national news agency. It is only places like this that make our bucket list longer and endless. 

One can get a free shikara ride to reach Gulshan Books.
