Vanity Fair fails: does Reese Witherspoon have a 3rd leg?

Posing for photos is a part of the celebrity lifestyle. But clearing the mistakes in the photos lies on the editors’ shoulders.

When Vanity Fair unveiled the cover for its highly anticipated, annual Hollywood issue on Thursday, many took note of the fact that Reese Witherspoon appeared to have three legs due to what some called a ‘Photoshop error’.

But that wasn’t the only digital alteration the cover underwent.

The cover includes an array of celebrities ranging from Oprah Winfrey to Michael B. Jordan to Tom Hanks.

‘12 Extraordinary Stars, One Momentous Year’, reads the caption.

It was originally set to feature 13 celebrities, but at the last minute, the magazine chose to digitally remove actor James Franco from the spread because of the misconduct allegations against him.

While Vanity Fair was dealing with the initial fallout, others spotted a further apparent mistake in a separate photo, which appeared to depict Oprah Winfrey with three hands.

That Winfrey photo has since been removed from the Vanity Fair website.

The magazine later responded on Twitter with an apology for an “error” in regard to Winfrey. As for Witherspoon, Vanity Fair said the third leg was actually the lining of her dress.

After Twitter users poked fun at the phenomenon, Witherspoon decided to play along.

“Well, I guess everybody knows now,” she tweeted. “I have 3 legs. I hope you can still accept me for who I am.”

Winfrey too played along. “I accept your 3d leg. As I know you accept my 3d hand,” she tweeted, acknowledging what appeared to be a third hand belonging to her in a separate photo in the Vanity Fair package.

Vanity Fair did not use the “P” word – Photoshop – but said the Winfrey image will be updated on the magazine’s Web site.
