Reliance Jio to make ultra-cheap Android smartphone

Reliance Retail Limited has decided to make a low-cost Android GO –OS based 4G VoLTE smartphone under the LYF brand in collaboration with Taiwanese chipset maker Media Tek. This is a move which is aimed at getting more subscribers from the new mobile although Jio is facing tough competition from other leading telecommunication firms in the market.

Individuals who are familiar with the smartphone industry says that Reliance Industries is likely to take a similar approach for what they did with the Jio Phone – the 4G Vo LTE smartphone with a built-in JIO SIM card which aimed at bringing prices to unseen levels for such a small device.

JIO are trying to bring 4G mobiles at more affordable rates. But the new Jio smartphone can go far under that price, the people said. “Reliance may soon place orders for millions of units for the (4G smartphone) device,” one of the people said. “Since Jio believes in subsidizing smartphones for mass uptake, they are most likely to take the same approach for their Android Go smartphone.”

JIO is trying to get 500 Million of smartphone subscribers. But they are far behind in achieving this rate. The chipset vendor has confirmed its association with Mukesh Ambani.

“Jio is bullish on Android Go smartphone and is working with us and the ODM partners to bring the device to the market in coming months. They have really pushed us to deliver Android Go-based device as soon as possible,” Kuldeep Malik, country head for corporate sales international at MediaTek India, told.

More than JIO Chinese handset makers are also trying to bring their Android affordable mobiles in the market.
