The Chief Minister Chouhan-led government, in its third term, has 20 cabinet ministers including the chief minister and nine ministers of state since December 2013.
Constitutional provisions allow a state to have a maximum of 35 ministers.
Madhya Pradesh Congress has written a letter to the election commission and the governor stating the government can’t reshuffle the cabinet at present as the model code of conduct is in force ahead of assembly by-polls in Mungaoli and Kolaras on February 24.
“This expansion or reshuffle would be against the Constitutional traditions. The proposed cabinet expansion, if any, is directly or indirectly a way to influence the electorate,” the letter read.
Arun Yadav, the state Congress president has demanded that the proposed reshuffle be postponed to February 28.
Chief Electoral Officer of Madhya Pradesh Salina Singh said she has forwarded the memorandum to the Election Commission of India (ECI).
