Prime Minister Narendra Modi took a jibe at Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, calling him a ‘big magician’ who could hide failure and corruption by maintaining a fake personality.
Addressing an election rally at Sonamura, 60km south of Tripura, Mr. Modi spoke about a ‘white kurta clad great magician in Tripura’ who painted a fake picture in the country. “We heard one magician of Bengal (P.C. Sarkar), but the magician here is more expert in concealing facts of all odds occurring at his behest,” Prime Minister said amid cheers from the crowds.
Narendra Chandra Debbarma, President of the Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura (IPFT) that forged an electoral alliance with BJP, shared the stage with Mr. Modi.

Mr. Modi invoked Maharaja Bir Bikram Manikya, the erstwhile king of Tripura who facilitated the merger of the state with the Indian Union. He said the BJP believes in ushering welfare for people of Tripura hailing from diverse and different cultural sects.
He said everyone involved in chit fund scams will be punished. “For the past 25 years, the Left government kept people in a fantasy through falsehood. People should punish it for all its misdeeds, failures, and scams – like the Rose Valley scams which caused misery to common people, even forcing them to commit suicide,” he said.
The Prime Minister addressed the second rally at Kailashahar in north Tripura. Both Sonamura and Kailashahar are located near the Bangladesh border and have a large Muslim population.
