Meghana left for college at 8.30 a.m. on Tuesday and returned home later in the day, while her parents were away at work. Her sister returned from a tuition class around 3.30 p.m. She noticed that Meghana’s room door was locked from the inside. She repeatedly knocked on the door but got no response. When she looked inside the room from a window, she saw her sister hanging from the fan.

Her parents alleged that her classmates were blaming her for the theft of a mobile phone and had removed her from the class’s WhatsApp group. The problem reportedly escalated when she contested the election for the post of the class representative.

“We tried meeting her class teacher to resolve the problem. But a group of students visited our house and fought with her,” claimed Chandrashekhar, Meghana’s father.

College principal C.P.S. Prakash denied the allegations and said that the institution has an anti-ragging committee, which Meghana never approached. “The student, along with her mother, had come to the college in September and spoke to the college coordinator. After her mother informed that the student was aloof even at home and would not speak to anyone, she was counseled by the coordinator, Professor Rajkumar,” said Mr. Prakash.

On the dispute between the class representative and the deceased, the principal said there was no question of discrimination. The R.R. Nagar police have taken up a case.
