Prominent actor R Madhavan who’s excited about his web series Breath went through the horrific experience of racism. The actor was born to Tamil parents in Bihar, remembering the harsh times.
Madhavan says, “I was called a Madrasi, and all sorts of discrimination would happen to me and I wouldn’t even realize. Frankly, I didn’t know what a racial discrimination was until I was 20. It is only now that people in India are widely aware of the term ‘racism’ are talking about it.”
It wasn’t difficult for Madhavan to live in unfavorable conditions, He would often give it back to the racists. He says, “I don’t think I am scarred for life, or I was deprived of opportunities due to the discrimination. I was the biggest rowdy of my school. I would ask people to watch out. I don’t feel bad that I had to go through the phase as I feel that life was preparing me to become an actor.”

What added to his experience was the military training he undertook. During his college years, Madhavan became actively involved in extra-curricular military training and at 22, he was recognised as amongst the leading NCC cadets in Maharashtra.
As a result, he made a trip to England and received training with the British Army, the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force, which he had, at a point, considered joining.
“Today, I don’t regret my change in tracks as I feel this is the best profession in the world. No biz (business) is like showbiz! However, my lessons did help me to better my onscreen portrayal of my character in Rang De Basanti where I played Flight Lt. Ajay Rathod. Also without the Navy training, I would not know how a Naval officer dives in water, which was important for my role in TV show Sea Hawk.”
Interestingly, the other culture Madhavan is experiencing is the Maharashtrian one, through his wife Sarita Birje. The actor also lived in Kolhapur and with this dual opportunity, the star from down South says that he is so fluent in Marathi that he can even write poems in the language.
