The importance of the visit of Iranian President aftermath of Prime Minister’s visits to Palestine, Jordan and UAE

Hassan Rouhani, the President of Iran, will arrive in India today evening for a three-day visit in the country. Mr. Rouhani will be landing today evening on Hyderabad instead of the National capital. Mr. Rouhani’s visit is seen as an important step in India’s foreign policy as he arrives a month after the historic visit of Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

According to the External Affairs Ministry, Mr. Rouhani will participate in various programs and attend the Friday prayers at Mecca Masjid in Hyderabad. They also hope that the Iranian President’s will project India’s aim for balance in its ties with the neighboring countries. He will arrive in New Delhi on Saturday and will be given an official welcome at the Rastrapathi Bhavan. The Iranian President is also expected to deliver a lecture at a think-tank in New Delhi.

Officials also said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold talks with the Iranian President over various topics such as trade, banking, connectivity, and energy. It is important that this meeting will take place soon after Mr. Modi’s visit to Palestine, Jordan, UAE, and Oman.

An official in the ministry is looking forward to the meeting as they are concerned whether Iran is comfortable with India’s relation with these countries while they acknowledge the fact that Iran has been important for India not only in the case of energy but also it is the only route for its access to Central Asia.

The two countries are also expected to discuss the progress of the Beheshti port project in Chabahar. India is expected to complete developments of berths by the end of this year while it is also using the existing facilities at the port so as to route a consignment of 1.1 million tonnes of wheat to Afghanistan.

Diplomats in both the countries are also stressing on the importance of banking channels. The Prime minister is expected to discuss the possibility of a “rupee- rial mechanism” with the Iranian chief. India is also expected to make a progress in the negotiations over the Farzad-B gas and oil fields that India had expressed its interest in 2016. Officials believe that India’s oil imports from Iran will go up this year due to the improving relationship between the two nations.

Mr. Roushani is also expected to seek India’s help at the upcoming meeting of the UN’s Financial Action Task Force, where the Iranian capital is hoping to avoid a blacklist regarding money laundering and terror finance.

The Ministry of External Affairs is very much hope that both the nations will be able to conduct the discussions smoothly which will help India to establish itself as a powerful nation that has been able to balance its ties with various nations in the international circuit. Mr. Roushani will return to Tehran on 17th.
