Hero teacher shot dead shielding students from Florida school gunman
Scott Beigel, 35, is believed to have been struck by a bullet after letting students take shelter in his classroom and trying to close the door as suspected shooter Nikolas Cruz walked past.
Student Kelsey Friend told ‘I am alive today because of him. she added: ‘He unlocked the door and let us in. ‘I thought he was behind me but he wasn’t.
‘When he opened the door, he had to relock it so that we could stay safe but he didn’t get the chance.’ Speaking directly to Mr Beigel’s loved-ones, she added: ‘Thank you for bringing and having this amazing person in life and giving him the power to be stronger than I could have ever been.
‘He will be missed by me and multiple friends, his name with me will live on.’ Scott also worked at a Starlight Summer Camp in Pennsylvania, where he worked with senior boys and loved showing off his collection of Fedora hats. Tributes to the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School teacher also flooded in on Facebook.
Adam Schwartz wrote: ‘Today is a really sad day as we learn about your passing Scott Beigel. ‘You were one of my favorite counselors growing up and my Olympics General my senior year. ‘Those kids were incredibly lucky to have you, you are a real hero. RIP.
