India finds itself in a shocking position in world corruption perception index

India secured 81st rank in the global corruption perception index for the year 2017, according to the list published by Transparency International. It came down two spots from its position in 2016(79th rank). India was also termed as the “worst offenders” in terms of graft and freedom of the press in the Asia Pacific Region as per the report.

The index includes a total of 180 nations and territories and ranked them based on the perceived levels of public sector corruption. According to sources, the index uses a scale from 0 to 100 where 0 stands for highly corrupt and 100 for very clean. However, India was able to score only 40 which was its score in 2016 too. In 2016, India had got the 79th position among 176 countries.

The Transparency International also added that in some countries in the Asia Pacific region like Maldives, India and Philippines, many journalists, activists, opposition leaders or watchdog agencies face serious threats. Some of them even get murdered. It also gave a shocking fact that 15 journalists who were working on corruption stories were murdered in the last six years in these countries. According to the list, these countries are the worst offenders who score high for corruption and have fewer press freedoms and greater numbers of journalist deaths.

New Zealand and Denmark occupy the highest positions in the list while Syria, South Sudan and Somalia were the lowest-ranked nations. The toppers scored 89 and 88 respectively. On the other hand, the lowest ranked teams scored 14, 12 and 9 respectively. The analysis draws a conclusion that countries with the least protection for press and non-governmental organisations have the worst rates of corruption.
