Kerala drawing excess water and declining water to Tamil Nadu, says TN officials

Soon after the shock of reduction of water allocation from Cauvery, Tamil Nadu government has now accused of another neighbouring state attempting to draw more water than its officially allocated amount.

The Tamil Nadu government sees Kerala government’s attempt to draw excess water from the Siruvani damn as an arm-twisting tactic to persuade Tamil Nadu to give more water from the Aliyar reservoir near Pollachi.

According to a TN government official, Kerala has been drawing more than its allocated amount of water from the past week onwards. The official also said that this will have a serious effect on the availability of drinking water in Coimbatore. It must be noted that the Coimbatore district depends heavily on the water from the Siruvani dam.

The Parambikulam-Aliyar project agreement which was signed in 1973, states that the Tamil Nadu government has to give 5 cusecs of water every day to Kerala throughout the year. However, it is reported that Kerala has been drawing at least 50 cusecs of water every day from Wednesday onwards. On Saturday, the state increased this to 90 cusecs on Saturday.

The Tamil Nadu officials also accused Kerala Government of placing sandbags in order to prevent water from reaching Tamil Nadu’s Pilloor dam. According to the officials, this has put the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board under a lot of stress as the Siruvani dam water level has gone down from 49.5 to 40 cusecs. They say that if the water level continues to go down, then Coimbatore might have to face great water crisis during the month of April.

It is reported that the Coimbatore district collector and PWD have sent a report to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister who might meet the Kerala CM to discuss the issue.
