Case filed against Grihalakshmi magazine for featuring breastfeeding model in its cover

An advocate in Kerala has filed a complaint against popular Malayalam magazine Grihalakshmi for showing a woman breastfeeding a child in its cover. Advocate Vinod Mathew Wilson, in his complaint, alleges that the picture is ‘lascivious’ in nature and it tends to degrade the dignity of womanhood.

The controversy erupted when Grihalakshmi magazines latest edition released with a cover featuring actress and writer Gilu Joseph breastfeeding a child. According to the advocate, the magazine has committed offences that come under Sections 3 and 4 of the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986

At the same time, the actress and the magazine have been receiving praise from various corners of the society with some even hailing it as a historic achievement in the Indian context. According to them, the cover picture is the beginning of a revolution to desexualise the act of breastfeeding.

Gilu Joseph who believes that breastfeeding is a mother’s privilege said that she was not at all apprehensive about appearing on the cover. According to her, breastfeeding is a beautiful thing which must not be interpreted sexually. She also opined that the objective of the cover is to question the tendencies of the society to shame women.
