The Ministry of External Affairs has clarified their stand on Dalai Lama following some reports which said that government officials were asked not to attend any events related to the religious leader. The MEA said that it has not made any changes to its stand on the respected leader.

According to an official in the MEA, Indian government’s relation with Dalai Lama is clear and consistent. The leader is very much respected by the people and he has complete freedom in carrying out religious activities in India.
According to the earlier report, the government had warned officials and leaders to stay away from Dalai Lama’s events, keeping in mind the nation’s sensitive relation with its neighbour China. It said that Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale had written a letter to Cabinet Secretary P K Sinha in order to inform this directive. Vijay Gokhale, who was the Indian Ambassador to China, had requested PK Sinha to produce a “classified circular advisory” in order to demand various ministries and departments to reject invitations to attend any event where the religious leader would be present
