Criminals quit the world of crime, garlanded and honored by Police

Some of us pray that the world is rid of evil and crime, and criminals. And some strive to achieve this goal.

And what if the criminal gives up his ‘profession’?

He should be given a chance and honored.

But the Meerut police had a mix-up and had honored a wanted criminal for quitting the world of crime.

On Saturday, Meerut police had felicitated 15 criminals with a long history of cases who vowed to quit the world of crime.

Only to realize that one of the felicitated ones was, in fact, a wanted criminal. To cover the goof-up, police arrested Imran early on Monday.

“There is a case against Imran at our police station. He has been booked under IPC sections 308 (attempt to commit culpable homicide), 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) and 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation). He has been at large ever since the case was filed. It was on Sunday when the person who had filed the case saw the picture of the accused in the newspaper and approached us. I don’t how Lisari Gate police officials ended up honoring him,” said Satish Kumar Rai, station house officer, Brahmapuri police station.

As many as 15 criminals – who vowed to quit the world of crime –were garlanded and were given a welcome of sorts in a ceremony at Lisari Gate police station on Saturday. They were even served snacks for the brief time they remained at the police station. The move was welcomed and was claimed to be “a result of the ongoing encounter spree of UP police, which had scared the criminals so much so that they came forward on their own to quit the world of evil”.

Mohammad Aslam, station house officer, Lisari Gate police station, said, “Ideally, a copy of the police FIR is sent to the police station under which his residence falls, but since Brahmapuri police station officials did not send us any such report, this error happened.”

Superintendent of police (city) Maan Singh Chauhan said, “An inquiry has been set up in the matter to ascertain what caused this goof-up. Our main aim was to reform the criminals who came forward to quit the world of crime, but since the list of these criminals was made at a lower level, it is being checked how this error took place and who was responsible for this.”
