Every time we hear about the news of trips to Mars, Elon Musk’s face comes to mind. Musk, the owner of SpaceX has already announced his plans to start a human colony on Mars by the end of 2030. But NASA and European Space Agency seem to have some plans of their own and have signed a letter of intent that could lead to the first two way trip to the red planet.
But NASA or ESA is not planning to send humans on board and the endeavour is a part of the Mars Sample Return(MSR) mission and the objective is to bring back rock and soil samples from Mars. The meeting held in Berlin, Germany discussed at length about the goals of the mission.
The ambitious project will help scientists to dive deep into the mysteries of Mars and find more about its history and whether it hosted life once. Scientists feel that with the limited resources they have in the form of Martian meteorites and various rovers and static landers, not a lot can be understood. The MSR mission, if it takes off, would collect samples from Martian surface and will bring it back to Earth. The samples will undergo detailed examination and complex tests in the laboratories. It is not feasible to take these giant instruments to mars for experiments and therefore MSR is the only possible way.
