A survey conducted by the University of Toronto based Citizen Lab in collaboration with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and The Indian Express reveals that the Internet Service Providers in India have blocked the highest number of web pages. The survey was conducted in ten countries where technologies marketed by Canadian company ‘Netsweeper’ appeared to be filtering content for internet service provider at a national level. Netsweeper has a long experience in the field of offering content-filtering solutions to different institutions.
The pages blocked are mostly porn and piracy related ones. But the list also includes websites run by NGOs, human rights and feminist communities, political activists etc. The countries in which the survey was conducted were India, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Qatar, Somalia, Sudan, UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain and Yemen. Pakistan came second in the list with 20 filtering systems, well behind Indias 42 filtering systems. Indian ISP blocked the highest percentage of websites – a total of 1158 out of 2464.
There have been many instances of ISPs blocked even in 2018 including the ones related to Rohingya issue, The Telegraph etc.
