Indian parents are known for pushing their children to become Engineers. While the trend may have gone in to a bit of a downward slope recently, it is too far from dead. But in spite of this push, our engineers are not scoring well when it comes to quality. Or is it the push that is the reason for the drop ?
According to a study by employability assessment company “Aspiring Minds” only 4.76 percent candidates can put the correct logic on paper- the basic requirement to call yourself as a programmer. A machine learning based assessment of software development skills conducted among 36000 engineering students from IT related branches of over 500 colleges revealed this astonishing and dismal stat. Two third of the students participated could not even write the code that compiles. The programming skills were found to be five times poorer for third tier colleges as compared to tier 1.

The Co founder of Aspiring minds, (a company which has some big names like Coca-Cola , Amazon etc in its client list) Varun Agarwal said that the lack of programming skills is adversely affecting the IT and data science eco-system in India. He added that the world is progressing to a scale where 3 year old is being introduced to programming and that India needs to catch up.
The study also attributed the dearth in quality of the education system to the practice of writing programmes on book and not actual computer along with the lack of quality teachers. The engineers with knowledge gets better job at the industry and doesn’t make it to teaching.
