This draws the lens more closely into the Independence Day speech delivered by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. His words of promise granting electricity to all un- electrified villages within 1000 days become a reality. This scheme can also raise India’s per capita power consumption of around 1,200 kWh.
As per the records of Indian government 597,464 census villages have been electrified. And now, Leisang village of Manipur joins the other 597,463 villages in the country who have access to electricity. As of April 28, all these villages gained access to electricity through the national grid or off grid solutions. The Pakol village in Churachandpur district of Manipur was the last village to be provided of grid electricity access. The DDUGJY undertook feeder separation ,strengthening of sub-transmission and distribution network, village electrification, setting up of micro grid and off grid distribution network with a view to provide ample power to the rural household and agricultural households 24X7.
A village can be declared electrified only if atleast 10% of the household can access power alongside with public set ups like schools, Panchayat office, health centres, dispensaries and community centres.
The feeder separation for rural agricultural and village households will definitely help stem load shedding practice and is expected to bring improved agriculture yield and socio economic upliftment of these rural areas.
The next target is pointed to electrifying around 40 million families in rural and urban areas by March 2019 under the Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana.
