The organisers of the conversion programme boasts of a number as high as 450 Dalits who renounced hinduism and wilfully embraced Budhism. The incident happened in the Saurashtra region where seven Dalits were allegedly flogged for skinning the carcass of a cow, a couple of years ago . Another major conversion was held in Junagadh in 2013.The conversion will be recognised only when registered with the district collector, according to the Gujarat Freedom Of Religion Law.
The residents said that they had to make this choice, as Dalits were treated as second grade citizens. One of the resident complained about Hindu cow vigilantes calling them Muslims and discriminating against Hindus over their caste. He added that even the government is against them by not fulfilling the promises made to them.
Udit Raja said that Dalits are beaten up for even having a moustache. “I do not know what alternative they have ” opined the BJP leader.
