Chhota Rajan convicted gangster Chhota Rajan and nine others in J Dey murder case

Chhota Rajan and nine others in the case involving the murder of veteran journalist Jyotirmoy Dey, convicted by The special Maharashtra Control of Organized Crime Act (MCOCA) court on Wednesday. It also acquitted journalist Jigna Vora, who had been convicted of investigating the murder, and Paulson Joseph.

Jyotirmoy Dey was shot dead in Powai on June 11, 2011, by the involvement hands of gangster Chhota Rajan. The prosecution has examined 155 witnesses in the case, of which around 10 are reported to have turned hostile. Of the 14 convicted in the case, Vinod Asrani has died and two are absconding.

The 11 accused attempted for his murder were Chhota Rajan, Satish Kaliya, Abhijeet Shinde, Arun Dake, Sachin Gaikwad, Anil Waghmode, Nilesh Shendge, Mangesh Agawane, Paulson Joseph, Deepak Sisodia and journalist Jigna Vora.

The Mumbai Police Crime Branch filed its charge sheet in the case on December 3, 2011. On August 5, 2016, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed a supplementary charge sheet, which claimed Rajan had told a journalist that he suspected Dey was working for the D-gang, run by global terrorist Dawood Ibrahim.
