Despite being modern and educated, there is still gender discrimination present in the society. Some still prefer boy child over girl child, and the latter is seen as a burden.
In Bihar, a woman killed her 3 daughters aged 3-8 by feeding them poison-laced food, before consuming it herself. The woman was repeatedly tortured by her in-laws for giving birth to 5 girls and not a boy.
The incident took place while the husband was away, in Gaya, Patna, Bihar.
The woman served the poisoned food to her 5 daughters and consumed it herself. Soon after, their condition deteriorated, and they were immediately rushed to a local government hospital by their family members.

While the woman and two of the children died the same evening, another girl died on Sunday. Police said two of her daughters survived as they didn’t eat the poison-laced food.
“We have registered a case and are conducting raids to arrest the woman’s in-laws who forced her to commit suicide along with [killing] her little daughters,” local police official Vikrama Singh said.
This is not the first gender discrimination incident that has taken place in Bihar. Recently, a man had slit open the throat of his wife with a sharp-edged knife after she gave birth to a fourth daughter, while in another case, a 30-year-old woman was beaten to death by her in-laws for allegedly giving birth to a fifth daughter.
Another such incident was reported from Bhagalpur district, where a man killed his 16-month-old daughter by allegedly injecting poison into her body, prompting his wife to register a case against her husband.
