Facebook runs on a very clever and sophisticated algorithm. The social networking site collects personal information about its users which is then used to target advertisements and find people sharing similar interests. Then such people with similar interests might appear in your “suggested friends” list.A handy feature , no doubt, but the same feature is apparently helping terrorists to find sympathisers anad supporters. This is happening at a time when facebook is already under criticism of failing to remove terrorist content from its platform.

Facebook’s feaature apparently is aiding extremists to develop fresh terror networks and even recruit new members to the organisation. Researchers have found that facebook activists of thousand Isil-supporters in 96 countries were introuced to one another through this feature. Lack of effective checks and analysis is hurting Facebook and the terrorists are able to exploit this feature and make the most out of it.
How far has facebook helped in building such networksof terrorism will come to fore when the findings of a study by Counter Extremism Project is published. Gregory Waters, one of the authors of the report said that, he was getting sugggestions of more Isil sympathisers after making contact with one. The study also examines how far Facebook has been able to tackle terrorist material. Often pro-terrorist contents are removed and accounts are suspended after months. The social networking giant is expected to tackle this problem as early as possible.
