It was Shalini Jain who was travelling from Chandigarh to Delhi on the Kalka-NewDelhi Shataabdi on July 3 2016 who had to deal with the food with with a live insect in the pack. She had reported the incident but it didn’t make much of an effect. The TTE apparently had apparently denied her the Complaints Register. But she wasn’t ready to back off as she sent a complaint to railway minister saying that she had to return all food packets. She was not ready to accept fresh packets either. However her efforts and obstinacy has produced results now.

Chandigarh Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum ordered a compensation of Rs 10000 along with refund of catering charges. The authority observed that “it was a serious lapse on the part of Catering officials”. Earlier CAG report had revealed some disturbing facts about the plight of food offered in railway. It said that contaminated and recycled food, unpurified water collected directly from tap and other food items not fit for consumpion was served on trains and stations.
