RSS and CPM activists hacked to death: Harthal Announced

A Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader was hacked to death by unidentified assailants on Monday night in Pallur. The deceased, Babu Kannippoyil, 45, was a former Mahe counsellor and a party local committee member.

Meanwhile, an RSS worker who was critically injured during a scuffle between CPM and RSS also succumbed to death. Shanej, an auto driver was attacked at Kalagramam in Mahe. Shanej, who suffered injuries on his face and hands was admitted to the Kozhikode medical college hospital.

According to police, he was found in a pool of blood on the way to Koroth temple in Pallur around 9.45pm and the local residents immediately rushed him to a hospital in Thalassery, but he was declared brought dead following profuse bleeding. Police said further details were not immediately available.

Police said there were deep wounds on his neck, back of head, belly and other parts of the body. The body has been kept in Indira Gandhi Cooperative Hospital, Thalassery.

A dawn-to-dusk hartal has been announced by CPM in Kannur and Mahe on Tuesday following the incident. Vehicles have been exempted from the hartal.

Bombs were hurled at Babu’s house six months ago. The CPM accused that activists of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) were behind the attack.
