Emirati officer gets jail term for seeking bribe from Indian applicant
An Emirati officer gets six months jail term for seeking Dh1,500 worth of a bribe from a driving licence applicant to help him pass the test in an unlawful way.
The Dubai Court of First Instance also ordered the 28-year-old Emirati officer to pay a Dh5,000 fine.
The public prosecution records show the officer knew an employee at a driving institute and he solicited the money from the Indian driving licence applicant, 25, for his unlawful favour of helping him pass the test by approaching that staff. The officer’s help would be getting the employee make the applicant pass without going through a real driving test.
The applicant was found guilty of offering a bribe to a public officer and the court sentenced him to six months in jail. He also received a Dh5,000 fine and a deportation order.

The case unfolded between May and September 17, 2017.
A policeman told the prosecutor that the driving licence applicant said during interrogation, that he had met the police corporal at a hospital in Al Muraqqabat in May 2017 when he was getting medical treatment for assault injuries. The applicant claimed to the police having sought the corporal’s help in obtaining a driving licence and that the latter demanded Dh1,500 for his help.
Copies of relevant WhatsApp audio messages between the two defendants have been used as evidence by the public prosecution.
The court ruling remains subject to appeal by the defendants and the public prosecution.
